La Place USA Interiors Reclaimed Teak

Environmental awareness and sustainability have become the biggest trends in recent years. Many furniture manufacturers and designers are making the best use of our resources in a responsible way. One of the most eco-friendly materials on the market is teak.
Teak wood is often used when making garden and indoor furniture and in boat building, because it has its own natural oil that makes the wood very resistant. Reclaimed teak is wood is simply teak that has been harvested from bridges, wharfs, jetties and structural beams in housing. The timber is then carefully selected and restored resulting in a rich mature aged patina, which is extremely durable and less likely to shrink or crack. Because it is being used again, it reduces the felling of trees, and puts existing materials to a new use.

http:www.laplaceusa.comwateco.html"Reclaimed teak is therefore extremely eco-friendly. It also that looks stunning when combined with contemporary and innovative designs that can fit beautifully into any interior. Reclaimed teak wood is used for many reasons: the wood's unique appearance, its contribution to green building, the history of the wood's origins and the wood's physical characteristics such as strength, stability and durability.
Reclaimed teak is quirky, rustic looking and also very practical. Because reclaimed teak wood is from old-growth trees, it tends to have fewer pitch pockets, sapwood and other natural defects. The wood looks great when left natural, stained, oiled or varnished. Another benefit this wood provides is that the wood is less likely to warp or twist than freshly felled timber. This is because is has been air-drying for decades, and is therefore fully adjusted to the atmosphere.
Reclaimed Teak is the wood of choice for many architects and builders. It is often more expensive than new wood, as the cost to retrieve it, clean it and get it to market costs more than the felling of new wood. However nothing is more timeless than a hand crafted piece of reclaimed teak furniture. Each piece is entirely unique giving it that extra special something. Purchasing authentic reclaimed teak furniture is not only an environmentally friendly option, but one can also end up owning a piece of the past. Reclaimed teak will last a lifetime and often remains in families for generations.

What is Food Insurance?Foodinsurance.com has designed an emergency pack and emergency kits to give people at least two weeks of great food and clean water until more permanent solutions can be obtained. Many of the meals are freeze-dried, which means they will last up to 10 years and retain their nutritional value. Also, unlike other survival food solutions that require you to grind wheat or employ some other 18th century skill, Food Insurance meals come prepackaged as lasagna, beef stroganoff, and a host of other great entrees. And to top it off, this food comes packaged in a high quality backpack so you can grab it and go.

Why do I need Food Insurance? If you think about it, food and water are vital to our survival. A human being can only live for a few weeks without food and only a few days without water. So why aren't we more concerned with protecting our most basic necessities? In light of the tragic events in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the power outage in New York City that brought the city to a standstill, and the constant threat of fires, earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural disasters across the country, it is important to make sure we always have the basic necessities of life with enough home food storage for your family to survive for at least two weeks. Learn more.
Where can I store Food Insurance food in my home? You may store Food Insurance in your garage, depending on your local climate. Optimal storage conditions are a cool, dry place. Avoid prolonged storage at temperatures above 75 degrees.
How long does the food from Food Insurance last? Food Insurance food is preserved using the same freeze-drying technology used by NASA - the food is guaranteed to last 25 years.
How is Food Insurance better than storing my own emergency food?

How is the food preserved? Many of our foods are freeze dried while the rest are either dehydrated or in their original state oatmeal, rice, etc.. With freeze drying, preservation is possible because the greatly reduced water content inhibits the action of microorganisms and enzymes that would normally spoil or degrade the substance. Freeze-drying also causes less damage to the substance than other dehydration methods using higher temperatures. Freeze-drying does not usually cause shrinkage or toughening of the material being dried. In addition, flavors, smells and nutritional content generally remain unchanged. Customer reviews and stories about Food Insurance:
"Our friends invited us over for dinner one night and introduced us to Food Insurance. We were amazed that all we had to do was add water and in a matter of minutes had a delicious gourmet meal. We had never considered that you could have food storage that actually tasted good and was so easy to prepare. We decided that night to invest in our future well-being."
Brad Johnson -- Draper, Utah
"My family and I have looked for emergency preparedness solutions for years. Here in Florida we have to be prepared for hurricanes and other violent weather. The Food Insurance package is the highest quality food and water solution I have found. I bought backpacks for my husband and me as well as for my three sons."
Nancy Wilson -- Pensacola, Florida
"In New York we take it for granted that there will always be food at the local market. After living through terrorist attacks and power outages, many New Yorkers are searching for a preparedness solution that will get us through the next crisis. I needed something compact and reliable that would fit in my relatively small apartment. The Food Insurance package fits easily in my closet. I can sleep better knowing the next time we have an emergency in this city, I will be ready for it."
Alex Cohen -- Brooklyn, New York
"I can't think of anything worse than not being able to feed your children. Every year we see and read stories of people in other parts of the country who have to endure fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. I always wonder what these people do for food and water until the national agencies arrive on the scene. I don't want to take the risk that some government agency won't show up in time."
Abby Ward -- Des Moines, Iowa
How does freeze-drying food work? Is it safe?
Originally produced for the U.S. Military and NASA,freeze-dried foodhas several advantages over frozen or dehydrated foods. Frozen foods retain flavor and nutritional value, but require low temperature storage conditions. Dehydratedcanned foods are shelf-stable, but lose flavor, texture and nutritional content. Freeze-drying is the best of both worlds, preserving freshness, color, and aroma, while being completely shelf-stable. Learn more.

Are the meats freeze-dried?Yes. All meals containing real meat are freeze-dried. In the Essentials and Emergency Plus kits, the lasagna, beef stroganoff and rice and chicken contain freeze-dried, real meats. At the request of our customers and for the purpose of adding variety, the creamy chicken rotini contains a soy based vegetarian chicken. In the larger family packages which contain food in 10 cans i.e., 632, 948, 1264, 1896, 2528, 3792, all meals containing real meat are freeze-dried. All freeze-dried items in our packages have either been nitrogen flushed or contain an oxygen absorbing packet to eliminate oxygen. Some of the meals in our packages do not require freeze-drying and are therefore, not freeze-dried. For example, granola, oatmeal and rice are not freeze-dried.

Windows replacement - Add value to your dream home

Just the thought of replacing windows can strike fear into the average person's heart. But there isnt a real reason to worry. Armed with the right information and the right tools, this job can be performed with a bit of elbow grease and determination. Because windows can be purchase relatively inexpensively at local home improvement stores, the installation costs always seem to make this project a bigger issue.
Some companies want to charge tens of thousands of dollars for their high quality product and high quality installation. While its important to get help from a professional if you are completely unfamiliar with home improvement, the adventurous do-it-yourselfer can accomplish this one step at a time.
Before starting work be sure to purchase energy efficient windows. Also remember to measure window size from the interior of the house. Measure inside the framework to get an accurate measurement. If you have odd shaped windows then you may need to special order or create filler when putting in the newer ones. It is not recommended that you create a filler larger than a couple of inches unless you want to redo the siding on your house.
The first step to replacing windows in removing the old ones. Working from the inside out, remove all trim work. If you have sash weight windows you must remove the weights as well. Once all of this and the window have been removed look for wood rot. Anything rotten will have to be replaced before installing the new window. If you have storm windows attached them unscrew them and lift them out. On older style windows you will need to remove any outside molding.
Dont try to remove nails from the frame. Simply use a reciprocating saw to cut through them. Take out the entire frame along with the old window sill. If you are going to replace rotting wood or put in a filler now is the time to do it.
If you are using single windows in place of larger or double windows then you will need to frame out where the new windows will go. Make sure that the new studs are at a 90 degree angle, meaning they are plumb and square with the opening. You may need to put in filler strips to help make the edges of the studs even to the original sheathing.
Before installing the new windows be sure that all of the edges are caulked. Even though the window is caulked you must also apply caulk to the opening where it will be placed. Be sure that the window and the opening match up or in construction speak, they would be plumb and square.
Put exterior screws through the flange of the windows This will anchor it into place. Next apply installation tape around the edge of the siding and the flange. Now you can replace the exterior trim work.
Back on the inside you can put in new insulation, replace the sheet rock and any new trim work. Now that you have one of the windows replaced the rest will be easier to install because you already have the process worked through.

Design Board: "Man" room

I completed this design board recently for a client who wanted a revamped "man" room. The room in question already has gorgeous dark brown leather furniture and a bookcaseentertainment credenza, but it needed window treatments, lighting, accessories, and most of all COLOR as the room was awash in "builder beige" and browns. When I received a completed decor questionnaire from this client, I read over everything, and I could immediately envision this room redone with a vintage modern flair to it, but with a masculine feel. Here is the design board:I am so excited about this room. I love the contrast between the large dark leather pieces the client already owns and the bright yellow-greens and hints of orange. I think this room is going to be absolutely gorgeous when it's finished - I can't wait to see the finished space!Note: Design boards also include a detailed listing of where to purchase each item and why it was chosen for the space, along with suggested furniture layouts and ideas for where to place each piece of artwork. If you are interested in ordering a room-specific design board or if you are in the Austin area and are interested in decorating services, please email me at McGeeClopperInteriorsbyMcGee.com.

Lentil Burritos

Last night I made lentil burritos, and oh my goodness are they fabulous! Meredith and Alex both happily ate every bite we gave them, and Mike loved the burritos so much he said we should put them in our regular meal rotation. Not bad, especially for a vegetarian dish!Recipe and photo from Southern Living Ingredients 1 cup dried lentils 4 cups water 1 small onion, chopped 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 cup 4 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese 16 7-inch flour tortillas 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce with roasted garlic 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon green taco sauce 1 teaspoon cornstarch Toppings: sour cream, guacamole Preparation Simmer lentils in 4 cups water in a saucepan over medium heat 20 minutes or until tender drain, reserving 1 cup liquid.Saut onion and bell pepper in hot oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat 5 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat stir in lentils and cheese. Spoon mixture evenly down center of each tortilla, and roll up. Place in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish.Bring 34 cup reserved liquid, tomato sauce, cumin, and taco sauce to a boil in a saucepan. Stir together remaining 14 cup reserved liquid and cornstarch until smooth. Stir into sauce mixture, and cook over medium heat, stirring often, 10 minutes. Pour over burritos.Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Serve with desired toppings.McGee's note: This recipe calls for 16 tortillas - this is a joke if you want more than a tablespoon or two of your lentil filling in each burrito. We made 8 burritos using the above-listed ingredients. Double it if you want a full pan of 16. I also topped it with shredded Mexican-blend cheeses before popping the pan in the oven. I served it with fat-free sour cream and fresh avocado, and it was WONDERFUL!

A little earlier in the day, I watched Meredith wander off to her bedroom. A few paces behind her, Alex was crawling as fast as he could after his big sister. I heard a door slam shut, and I figured that I'd soon hear Alex crying about being shut out of his sister's room.Silence.Hmmm....After a few moments, I got up to check on Alex. He wasn't in the hall or in his room, and the doors to the the bathroom and Meredith's room were closed.I opened Meredith's bedroom door and peeked inside. Just inside the door, two adorable faces turned and grinned at me. And then Alex leaned over and pushed the door shut in my face. As the door closed, I heard Meredith say, "We need privacy, Mom!" Four years old and 9 months old, and they're already shutting out their parents.I told Mike I think they're plotting against us. Perhaps it's a good thing we only have two kids. If we had three, we'd be outnumbered, and then we'd really be in trouble.

Say goodbye to the McMansion!

We've honestly never been huge fans of so-called McMansions - giant homes with every conceivable amenity crammed into far more square footage than the average American family could possibly "need." Such giant houses are also an enormous waste of natural resources, and they cost a small fortune to heat and cool. We chose to buy an 1800 square foot home, and it works just fine for our family of four, even with me working from home. We've long found it intriguing that as American families grow smaller, the size of our homes seems to increase. I followed a thread of a message board recently where a childless couple was encouraged to shop for a 4 bedroom house so they'd have plenty of room for a guest room, a home office AND a "workout room." Since when do homes HAVE to have a designated guest room, especially when you consider just how many days out of the year a guest room is really used.In the 1950s, the average American home was a mere 983 square feet! If you asked most American families to live in a house this size, many would balk. But there's no guest room! No playroom! The kids would have to share a room! There's no home office! No gym! No TV room! By 2006, the average American home had ballooned to more than 2300 square feet to accommodate all of those new "must have" rooms. It was with great interest then, that we read today that the average American home is actually SHRINKING! The US Census Bureau is reporting that the average American home size fell in 2009 to 2,135 square feet. Perhaps this is in line with the economic downtown, as consumers who do choose to build new homes opt to be less conspicuous in their consumption. Perhaps a bit of environmentalism is taking hold and people are realizing the environmental cost of building and maintaining a large home. Or perhaps we as a country are starting to slowly realize that you can have multipurpose rooms - that an office can share space with a guest bedroom or a treadmill and some free weights. One can hope, right? To read more about the shrinking American home, read CNNMoney's article.

4 year well child visit

I took both kids to the doctor this morning. Meredith had her 4 year well child visit supposed to happen in June, but I had to reschedule it because of a conflict with my work, and Alex was a bit under the weather so he went in for a sick child visit.I am amazed at how quickly a young child's mood can change. After the nurse left us in the exam room, Meredith sat quietly in the chair next to me and listened to me read aloud from "Peter Pan". The doctor walked in, and suddenly Meredith was bouncing off the walls. She practically vibrated she had so much energy. I have no idea why she does that or where these sudden bursts of energy come from.At 4 years old and almost 3 months, Meredith weighs in at 40 pounds, 4 ounces, and she is 41.5 inches tall. This puts her in the 75th percentile for both her height and her weight. She's always been on the upper end of the spectrum in terms of height and weight, but it does appear that her growth is slowing down a bit.Alex, on the other hand, is still growing like the proverbial weed. Since his 9 month well baby visit in early August, he's put on almost another pound! He weighed in at 25.5 pounds today. He'd been running a low grade fever and had been abnormally fussy for him, and I'd chalked it up to teething. Then I saw a nasty ulcer in the back of his mouth. The doctor checked and found a few more. Based on his symptoms, it looks like our poor little boy has coxsackie virus. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be nearly as bad a case as Meredith had earlier this year. He should be back to his normal happy self in a few more days.

Feeling gray?

The ever fabulous Joni over at Cote de Texas wrote an excellent post a few days ago about GRAY. It is everywhere in the world of home interiors. I first started to really notice it about a year or so ago - gray walls are such a lovely compliment to the veining in carrara and calacatta marble slabs and tile! See?Image: Rock Revelations of LondonGray or grey, depending on how you choose to spell it has moved out of the kitchen and bathroom and is now in use in just about every room imaginable. It's on walls, in printed fabrics, on upholstered furniture, in window treatments. It is, in my humble opinion, the new chocolate brown. For the last few years, brown has filtered down through the decorating ranks until it became quite common to walk into any suburban home and see an expanse of chocolate brown. I think this is the direction gray is heading. Mike and I are both seeing so much gray lately that we were going to do a blog post about it, but Joni beat us to it, and as usual, she's far more thorough than I likely would have been.Head over to Cote de Texas and check out Joni's examination of all things gray.

Beautifully renovated home

Here's a little eye candy for your Tuesday morning! The following photos are part of a remodeled home in New York that was recently featured in Traditional Home. The home's entry is a graceful space. I love the beautiful white paneling on the walls and the sharp contrast between the white walls and the dark wood floors. The entry also has a few items we're seeing in quite a few places: a natural fiber rug, ceramic garden stools, and a simple glass pendant light. I just wish the magazine had included a different view of the entry, because from this angle, the ceiling light appears quite offset from what appears to be the center of the space. The living room is an exercise in symmetry, with art displays, tables, vases and lamps gracing either side of the remodeled fireplace. I love the symmetry, but the book lover in me would prefer to see low built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace instead of tables. Still, I love the furniture arrangement, the colors, and overall feel of this room.Another view of the living room:Those glass doors and transom windows are gorgeous! Even though this is a large living area with a very high ceiling, the room feels airy but not overly expansive or empty. This is part of the sitting roomtv room. I'm not a huge fan of the fabric used in the window treatments, but I love the pale blue upholstered furniture, and I'm a huge fan of the built-in bookcase. The print on the pillows is also very popular - I've seen several dozen variations of it while perusing fabric sites for NeNe's home remodel, and I have to admit that I'm a fan of the trellislattice fabric. This is a corner of one of the home's guestrooms. I love the chair and the simple artwork on the walls, and I especially love the built-in window seat. I'm such a sucker for built-ins. I really am. I think they provide a cozy space in an otherwise large room, and they can really maximize your storage and use of space in a smaller room. The kitchen. The white wood paneling from the entry and living room carries through the kitchen and the dining room as well. I love the continuity, and I love how the paneling on the end of the kitchen island mimics the walls. I'm also madly in love with the beams and beadboard on the ceiling. I could do without the striped fabric on the windows, and I think the green on the walls above the countertop is a little too bright, but even so, this is a gorgeous kitchen. The dining room and more lovely walls. The rustic table is a great contrast to the more formal trimwork and sconces on the walls. It keeps the room from feeling too formal or too fussy. The monkey artwork? Yeah, totally not my style at all. What do you think? What do you like about this house remodel? What catches your eye?

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That's how the saying goes, I think. Today Alex's journey began: he took his first independent step!He was standing up, about a foot away from me, holding my hands. I let go, and he balanced for a few seconds before flashing his trademark Happy Baby Man grin and taking a precarious step forward. As soon as his foot touched the floor, he held his arms out to steady himself, grinned at me some more and then grabbed my hands again for support. We're awfully proud of our little boy tonight!

The new school year is upon us, and kids are trickling back into school this week. The result: a blissful week of uncrowded stores, uncrowded shopping centers, uncrowded parks, and uncrowded swimming pools.Meredith starts 4 year old preschool next week, so this is her last week of summer. I am planning to take full advantage of all the "big" kids being in school! We will make at least two, hopefully three, trips to the neighborhood pool during the school day and do some last minute back to school shopping. If it weren't so insanely hot here, I'd probably throw in a few picnics at the park too. Darn Texas heat!

Shoe shopping with Meredith

We promised Meredith a new pair of tennis shoes for preschool, so I hit the mall with the kids today to take advantage of tax free shopping. I was hesitant about going shopping today because both kids got up very early today, and Meredith had a meltdown before we even left the house because she wanted her hair to look like Princess Leia's from Star Wars, and she was mad because she didn't have long enough hair to make really BIG buns on either side of her head.A meltdown over hair before I've even finished my coffee just doesn't bode well for the rest of the day.Meredith had her mind made up that she HAD to have a pair of Skechers shoes that light up when walking. I love my daughter, but bless her heart, she is one of those children who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. All I could picture was her in light up shoes, running into walls because she's busy looking at her feet and not at what is right in front of her.Apparently a size 11 girls' shoe is VERY in demand right now because our choices were extremely limited - and not just in Skechers. I would estimate that 80 of the shoes we asked to see in her size were sold out. This led to a lot of drama from Meredith and a lot of frustration from Mommy because I really didn't want to go to more than one shopping center. She gave serious consideration to a pair of purple Skechers sneakers that I thought were frankly pretty ugly. By that point though, we were on our fourth shoe store, and I was more than willing to buy them so we could just leave and be done with it all. Then she turned the corner and saw them: sparkly pink shoes.Cue a light from above and music from on high. After trying them on, hopping up and down, running back and forth across the shoe department and doing a crazy dance, Meredith declared the sparkly pink shoes "absolutely perfect and VERY high fashion stylin'." The purple Skechers were slip ons, and these pink shoes are BIG GIRL shoes, according to Meredith, because they have shoelaces. She agreed that she was willing to learn to tie her shoelaces, and I was thrilled that we made it out of the store without a pair of shoes that light up, squeak, or play music. As we left the store, Meredith took my hand and said, very seriously, "Mommy, these new pink shoes are perfect, but they don't match my purple purse. I think we need to shop some more." It's a good thing our second child was a boy. I don't think we could afford two of Meredith.

Penny for your thoughts?

How about a LOT of pennies?Yes, that is a kitchen counter made out of pennies, and it is entirely a DIY project. You can read the instructions here: http:makeprojects.comProjectInstall-a-Penny-Countertop851 The short version of how to do it: once you clean the pennies, you lay them out over an existing counter and seal everything with multiple coats of epoxy and polyurethane.I have to admit that it does look kind of neat. I can't see us doing something like this in our own home though. At least, not with pennies. For starters, Meredith would probably try taking a knife to the counter to free up some pennies for her piggy bank. Second, I can't imagine trying to sell a house with a penny countertop. Okay wait, I can - I can absolutely picture a penny countertop in a funky central or south Austin house that has purple walls, wild light fixtures, and crazy sculptures in the front yard. In THAT type of house, yes, a penny countertop would work, and it likely would not affect resale value at all because those houses are inevitably in pretty desirable locations. For the rest of us though, I have trouble imagining penny counters doing much for your home's resale value. From a distance the penny counter pictured above almost looks like bronzed penny-round tiles - and THAT might make for an interesting and less "odd" DIY counter option. Here are some stone penny round tiles from Mission Stone Tile that have the look of pennies without BEING pennies. Something like this might be a better, albeit more expensive, option for tiling your counter if you like the look but are concerned about resale value:I could picture this tile paired with an interesting tile pattern on the walls to top off a kitchen with maple cabinets and modern, streamlined faucets and fixtures.Or if you like the look of round tile on a counter but don't want anything too dark, check out these beautiful carrara marble penny round tiles, also from Mission Stone Tile:What do you think? Would you ever tile your counter with pennies? What about penny round tiles?

Today was pretty horrible. I expected the kids to be difficult to manage today. Meredith is always a handful after a lengthy visit with grandparents, and on top of that, she was over-tired. Alex was exhausted too, and I knew that both kids really missed their dad and weren't going to be happy when he left for work this morning. Mike literally dragged Meredith behind him as he walked to the front door. She begged the whole way there "Please take me with you. Please don't go to work today. Please let me come too."It went downhill rapidly after that: Alex refused to nap today and chose to vacillate between playing happily and screaming like a wild banshee. Meredith whined and complained about everything and had a very hard time listening and following instructions. I had to work my regular part-time job plus an extra assignment my employer sent out. Oh yeah, and our air conditioner broke. Again. I changed out the filter which took two trips to Home Depot because I bought the wrong size filter the first time, and when that didn't affect the temperature at all, I called the ac repairman. To recap: we spent several hundred dollars in ac repair service calls the first year we bought our house. We spent nearly 2500 on a new ac condenser two years ago. We spent another 2200 on a new coil a mere two months ago. The cost for today's after hours service call? Another 90. Oh yeah, and it. didn't. work. That's right, I spent 90 today to fix the air conditioner, and the temperature dropped to 80 degrees in the house before rising again to 83, which is the current temp in our home at 10:00 pm.Obviously we will be calling the ac repairman again in the morning. As I put Meredith to bed tonight, she frowned and said, "Texas is not fun. I want to go back to NeNe's house." Kiddo, after today, I can't blame you a bit. I am saying a little prayer that tomorrow is a better today.

I arrived home late last night after more than a week in Arkansas with the kids. Meredith and Alex glued themselves to Mike while I unloaded the car. Within minutes of arriving home, Alex peed on Mike, and Meredith kicked a football into Mike's forehead. Nothing says "We missed you, Dad!" like pee and a swift kick to the head, right?I think I need to reevaluate future road trips without Mike. The drive to Arkansas was not bad. I packed plenty of snacks and drinks and a bunch of movies for Meredith to watch. We had a pleasant stop for a late lunch north of Dallas, and the kids both took lengthy naps through most of Oklahoma. I arrived at NeNe's house feeling pretty great. It's funny how you feel like you're a totally AWESOME parent when your kids are behaving. The trip home - not so awesome. I'll spare everyone the gory details, but it involved a lot of whining, crying and screaming.Despite all of the stress of the drive home, we made it in one piece. I'm planning for a hopefully quiet day at home today so I can unpack and the kids can unwind from the trip. We had such a great time with NeNe, and we miss her so much already!

On Friday we took Alex to the pediatrician for his 9 month well baby visit, where he hit a big milestone: he is ON the growth chart across the board. His head circumference, weight and height are all right at or above the 95th percentile, but he is now on the chart.Actually, Alex has lost weight since his last appointment a few weeks ago for an ear infection. He is now 24 pounds, 12.5 ounces. The weight loss is due to his new mobility - all of that crawling and cruising burns a lot of calories! Alex has grown two inches since his last well baby visit at 6 months old. He is now 30.5 inches tall!

Bathroom renovation update

Remember our bathroom? The one we started remodeling way back in February? Yeah, that one? We didn't forget about it. Life, though, has a funny way of interfering with the best laid renovation plans. Our renovation ground to a halt when my dad passed away earlier this year. When we returned home, we spent a while trying to get back into our normal routines, and then my mom came for a visit. Before we knew it, spring was here, and we had to devote a few weekends to some much needed work in the backyard. With Meredith's birthday, Alex's baptism and visits from a lot of out of town family looming, we decided to get to a stopping point on the bathroom and then take a break for the summer.Yes, you read that correctly. We decided to leave the room half-done and come back to it later. It's admittedly not the best decision we've ever made in terms of renovation, but for our own sanity, we really needed to take a break and spend some weekends enjoying our free time with each other and with our children. Heading into August, we are both feeling far more sane. We've been able to finish a few smaller projects around the house and yard. I've been able to take on some decorating jobs and focus on my new business. We've been able to enjoy lazy summer days with the kids.We realized though that we never shared where we stopped with the bathroom renovation. Sorry about that. We repainted the walls White Lagoon by Glidden and the ceiling just plain white, installed a new low-flow toilet, replaced the old ceramic tile with beautiful cream marble tiles, and replaced all of the tile surrounding the bathtub and shower. We decided to take the subway tile all the way up to the ceiling, and we are so pleased with how it turned out! We also added a honey onyx tile accent and grouted the white subway tile with a beige grout. Here is the new floor with less than stellar natural light - sorry:Here is the finished tile in the shower:When Mike said he was reaching a stopping point and then STOPPING for the summer, he really meant it. The box containing the new shower head, knobs, and faucet are in an open box in the bathtub. Meredith actually prefers using the garden tub in our bathroom, and Alex doesn't care one way or the other, as long as he gets to splash in the water, so to be quite honest, we really haven't missed the second tubshower. When we resume work on the bathroom, we'll be installing the new faucetshower head combo, refacing the bathroom vanity, putting in a new vanity top, sink and faucet, and replacing the baseboards and the trim around the door. We are also debating tearing a hole in the wall opposite the toilet and putting in some shallow built-in shelves to house towels and other accessories. My guess is that we'll finish the bathroom, minus the custom built-in, and then perhaps come back and add that later.Hopefully once Mike finishes up the project that is keeping him busy with work and Meredith gets settled into her new preschool classroom, we'll be able to get back to work on the bathroom.

The technology gap. Or "Our child makes us feel old."

After a certain point in adulthood, little things start to crop up that remind you "Hey, you aren't so young anymore!" Lately Meredith has gotten very good at bringing up some of those little things and reminding us that yep, we're pretty darn old. It doesn't help, of course, that I just celebrated my birthday and that Mike's birthday - his LAST before the big 4-0! - is just around the corner.Meredith recently discovered video cassettes. We still have a few VCR tapes hidden in the depths of our entertainment cabinet, and there are a few that we're comfortable letting her watch. She held a cassette in her hands and said, "Well this is weird. Why is it so big and heavy?"After Mike hooked up the VCR for her yes, we still own a VCR, he popped in a tape and then pushed "rewind." Meredith freaked out. "Why is it making that noise? What's happening?" He explained that the tape had to rewind. Her response: "What's rewind???"Thanks kiddo. We feel old now.Another example: Meredith asked to see some pictures of Papa, and she asked if I had pictures of him that she had not seen before. I brought out a box of photos from the closet, ranging pretty much from high school until early in my relationship with Mike. We sorted through the photos, and I pointed out a few to her. After a few minutes, Meredith looked up at me in confusion and said, "Why aren't these on the computer with the rest of the pictures?" I explained that these photos were taken with a film camera, and they had to be scanned first to go on the computer. Her response, "What's a film camera?". She also picked up a negative and exclaimed, "This is NEAT! What the heck IS this?" I tried to explain it to her, but the concept of film and waiting for a roll of film to be developed is so incredibly foreign to her. She seemed horrified at the thought of taking a picture and being unable to see it right away. We've pondered this before - technology has changed so much since our childhoods, and it's such a big part of our children's lives. We grew up in a time before everyone had cell phones. Before CD players and MP3 players existed. Before DVDs and Netflix. Before the era of video games. Before 100s of TV channels were common. Before there were entire channels that played nothing but kids' programming. Before digital cameras, email and smart phones. Before the internet. Mike and I both had record players when we kids. The television sets in our parents' living rooms got all of about 5 channels. We were blown away by the technological marvel that was Super Mario Brothers on the Nintendo. We were kids before the era of technology. Our kids are growing up in an era where the absence of technology is completely foreign to them. At some point, we're quite certain that our very precocious daughter will point out to us that we're SO behind the times - after all, we were born in the last MILLENIUM. The upside though, if there is an upside to your kids making you feel old, is that technology is so prevalent in their lives that removing it ought to be a great punishment when they're older. We're pretty sure that being forced to live as Mom and Dad did when they were kids will seem like a fate worse than death to our kiddos. insert evil maniacal laugh here

Remuddling

When we were house-hunting for our first home, we knew we wanted an old house, preferably a bungalow or a Prairie style home built before 1940. We were fortunate to live in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the time, which has a large selection of reasonably-priced old houses. It was during this time that we first heard the term "remuddling." Remuddling refers to well-intentioned remodels done on usually older homes that mess up the architectural integrity or style of the house. An article we read on the subject lamented the practice of gutting an old house and committing such remodeling sins as converting a secondary bedroom into a giant walk-in closet for a master bedroom, installing a modern-style kitchen in a century old home, and otherwise remodeling a home in such a way that the interior doesn't match the exterior. We've seen quite a bit of remuddling over the years, and we're always mystified by it. We've always wondered why someone would buy a lovely old house if they want the interior of their home to look exactly like the inside of a new construction model home. Or why someone would want a century-old house if they hate small closets and small bathrooms. Or why anyone would want to own a Prairie style home that they then feel the need to remodel as a Victorian. In browsing Realtor.com, we've found a few example of remuddling we want to share. This home is currently for sale. It is a bungalow, built in 1916.Exterior:Lovely, isn't it? While the owners managed to preserve some of the home's interior design, the bathrooms have been gutted and redone in a great example of well-meaning remuddling.Bathrooms:It appears the perhaps the vanities were made from antique furniture pieces, which I'm sure the homeowner thought would be a nice touch. Unfortunately, neither vanity goes with the style of the house. The sinks and mirrors don't really go with either vanity, and the stand alone showers don't match the style of the vanity at all. Don't get us started on the complete and total absence of a bathtub in a 1916 house! The owners probably spent at least several thousand dollars per bathroom remodel, and the result are two rooms that are a mishmash of styles, none of which really match the home.Another remuddle that's often seen with older homes is the poorly designed addition. Many old houses are small. Why? Well, because way back in the day, most families didn't think they needed a designated guest room, a home office, a bedroom for each child, two living rooms, a playroom for the kids, huge master suites and closets the size of bedrooms. In 1950, the average American home was 983 square feet. By 2004, the average American home was 2,349 square feet. Many older homes are thus considered "too small" by 21st century standards, and additional rooms are built onto the house.Sometimes these additions are really well done. The architectural style of the home is maintained and great thought and planning is giving both to the flow of the new interior space and the appearance of the newly expanded home's exterior. And then sometimes, homeowners just slap an addition onto a house without much thought for how it will look. This house is on the market in our former hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here is the front of the house. It was built in 1930.And here is the back, with a very ugly addition:It looks like the view from a downtown back alley. This home also contains a badly remuddled kitchen. It's bland, nondescript, and it looks like it was thrown together on a quick trip to a big box home improvement store. That's not to say that you can't get a goregous kitchen at Home Depot. You can, but it requires a homeowner with a great eye for design or a homeowner who has some help from a good interior designer or kitchen designer. Here is another bad addition. This house was built in 1939. At some point the house was expanded. The result: a giant garage with a house hiding behind it. Here's another addition that provided more square footage but resulted in a strange exterior.Remuddling isn't limited to older houses though. Poorly designed additions, renovations that are a completely different design style from the rest of the house, and rooms that have lost their functionality can plague newer homes too. We saw some of this while searching for a house in the Austin area. One of the more common remuddles we often see in newer homes are dining rooms hastily and poorly closed off to create an additional bedroom. It's a fairly cheap way to get an extra bedroom, but if it's not done properly, the flow of the house is ruined, and the new bedroom clearly looks like it was meant to be something else.Coming later: how to avoid a remuddle.

Alex update

The pediatrician thinks that it's likely Alex has another ear infection. Poor Baby Man slept off and on most of yesterday and then spent a lot of last night crying. Nursing seems to put pressure on his ear, but he's hungry, so he clings to my shoulder and sobs, "NaNa, NaNa!" which is his word for "nurse." It just breaks my heart. As I'm writing this, he is in the midst of that good period of time where the baby ibuprofin is working and his fever is down enough that he can sit on the floor and play with a few toys. We started antibiotics today for the ear infection, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll feel MUCH better within 24 hours.

Alex's Baptism

Alex was baptized on the first Sunday in June. We wanted to celebrate both his baptism and Meredith's birthday the same weekend so our extended family could share the joy of both events with us.Several days before the baptism, Meredith took a chunk out of Alex's hair with a pair of fingernail scissors. Note to other parents: if scissors are sharp enough to cut fingernails, they are sharp enough to cut hair. Fortunately Alex wasn't hurt, and when she realized that he could have been hurt by her actions, Meredith was extremely upset. Upset enough, in fact, that she accepted her punishment lengthy loss of all sharp instruments that could remotely cut anything without putting up a fight. All scissors at Casa de Mike and McGee are now out of her reach.I purchased Alex's outfit for the baptism well in advance of the big day, and I crossed my fingers that he wouldn't outgrow it. My fabulous midwife and now dear friend Kristen went shopping with me and kept looking at the outfit and looking at Alex and saying, "I don't know... I'm not sure this is going to fit him in June." It did fit - barely. If he'd grown any more, I would have spent Sunday morning frantically resewing buttons. Had his feet grown any longer, he'd have had to go barefooted. Seriously, the Baby Man needs to slow down already. He's growing up way too fast.Meredith decided the morning of the baptism that she had zero interest in wearing the dress we'd chosen for her, and she had to be bribed into wearing it. I let her wear my cross necklace if she agreed to wear the outfit I wanted her to wear. She is extremely argumentative and tried to negotiate everything from the hair bow to the shoes. She has a bright future ahead of her as an attorney, we think.Somehow, we managed to get everyone dressed and out the door in plenty of time, and that is when I felt Dad's absence. He was notorious for hassling everyone prior to an event, "We're going to be late, We're going to be late. We need to leave now. Why aren't you ready?" He hated to be late. He would have been right at home, sitting in the living room, dressed at least a half hour before everyone else, telling us all that we were going to be late for church. Then, despite being ready early, he probably would have grumbled at me when I made him pose for pictures with the children. Except that he wasn't there. At least, not physically. I like to think that he was there in spirit.A few photos in the back yard, before we left for church:NeNe and her "mini me":NeNe and AlexAlex did incredibly well during church. We chose to have him baptized during our church's contemporary service because it is far more child-friendly than the traditional service, and it's the service most of our friends attend as well. However, that particular Sunday was our senior pastor's last Sunday before retirement, and I think that perhaps some details slipped through because no one aside from our family seemed to remember that in addition to Alex being baptized, we were officially joining the church. We'd attended for some time, and we felt like it was about time to make it official. So, um yeah... it ended up being a little disorganized, but as Mike said, "Eh, whatever. We joined, he's baptized. It's fine."Alex slept through most of the church service, and he barely fussed at all during the actual baptism. Meredith REALLY wanted to play in water in the baptismal font. Thank goodness for the presence of our dear family members, all of whom helped keep her quietly occupied and out of the water. When we got home, I wanted to get some more photos of our adorably attired children with our extended family. Meredith, however, jumped out of the car and ran for the front door saying, "I WANT TO CHANGE CLOTHES NOW! I DON'T LIKE THIS DRESS!" We passed the camera very quickly and took as many pictures as we could because I absolutely would not have put it past her to start stripping on the front lawn.Alex and Meredith with Alex's godparents: my sister Sarah and her significant other, Steve. All of us, photographed by NeNe. My sister and I look nothing alike! That was pretty much it for the photos. Meredith ran inside and started pulling her dress off right after this photo was taken. We let her change clothes, and we let Alex switch into something less likely to be ruined by a sudden catastrophic diaper blowout.Mike's parents joined us after church, and we all had a lovely lunch together. The grandparents all watched the kiddos Sunday evening too so Mike and I could go out with Sarah and Steve. It was a pretty full weekend, but we had a wonderful visit with everyone, and we're so glad they could all be there with us.

Illness deja vu

This summer it seems like I almost constantly have one child sick. Meredith had coxsackie virus this summer, followed by a lengthy stomach bug. Now Alex is sick. I thought his frequent night-waking and need for constant nursing and snuggling with Mama was due to teething he's up to eight teeth now!, but I'm afraid it's something more. Baby Man is running a fever of almost 102 degrees, and he is in a foul mood this evening. Poor little guy. While we're discussing illness here, why is it that kids wait until after 5pm to run a fever??? Why can't they start it at, oh, say 4:00 or so when the pediatrician's office still has a nurse taking phone calls? I guess we'll be calling the doctor's office in the morning. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a quick minor virus and that our perpetually happy boy is back to his normal self very soon.

Feeling a little dark

We've always been fans of light, open and airy spaces when it comes to decorating our own house. Lately though, I'm feeling a bit drawn to rooms with some darker colors, to the point where I'm seriously considering repainting our bedroom. Here are a few spaces I find inspiring right now.I love this bedroom from County Living. The dark walls are a sharp contrast to what I normally prefer for my own home, but when paired with simple white bedding, light colors on the windows and pops of color like the light blue lamp, this room feels cozy.I'm also loving this blue and white bedroom by MAX CO. I'm not a fan of the glossy finish on the wall color, but I love the dark blue walls and the lovely white paneling on the bottom half of the wall. While I think this room needs something above the bed, I love the pairing of dark walls with neutral bedding. Here's another cozy and stylish dark bedroom from Lonny Magazine. The mirror as headboard is an interesting choice.I'm also in love with this gorgeous gray wall color. I'm seeing more and more antique brass finishes in designer rooms, this one included. I think antique brass is going to be the next big trend in metal finishes. Image via Veranda Magazine.I just asked Mike what he would think about me redoing our bedroom in something dark and dramatic. His response: "As long as you don't spend a dark and dramatic amount of money on it, I'm fine with it." He's such an awesome husband.
