Having lived in California for most of my life, I've experienced my
share of earthquakes. But nothing I've experienced even remotely
compares to the havoc wrought by the one in Haiti and now this one
in Chile which has the potential to be much worse according to the
New York Times. Since tsunami warnings and advisories are in effect
for some parts of the U.S. along with many other countries around
the Pacific, you may want to check for advice on how to prepare for
a tsunami from Matt Rosenberg, the Geography Guide for About.com.
If you want to help those affected by this earthquake, here are
some resources at Huffington Post. If you need information about
somebody's whereabouts in Chile, Google has this resource.

After a long history of powerful quakes, Chile developed strict
building codes with careful attention to earthquake engineering and
seismic design. News Commentary: Why Chile's Stronger Earthquake

Haiti's Presidential Palace

Before the dome toppled, the National Palace in Port-au-Prince was
a stately Neoclassical building, similar to America's White House.
And, like the White House, Haiti's presidential home has a troubled

What Is Infrastructure?
News reports of Haiti blame the country's rising death toll on a
lack of infrastructure. What's that? Seems the word applies to just
about everything needed to make a society function. More: What Is
