Huge Recall of Home Improvement Books
From: About.com Garages Storage Spaces

Almost one million home improvement books have been pulled from the shelves due to "errors in the technical diagrams and wiring instructions." That's according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The publisher, Oxmoor House of Birmingham, Alabama, has acknowledged that the books contain inaccurate information that could result in electrical shock or a fire hazard. The name Oxmoor may not ring many bells, but the the names Sunset Books and Lowe's are the very recognizable public faces involved and the names that appear on most of the books. The nine books involved in the recall and their publication dates are: "Sunset Basic Home Repairs" (1995, 1975) "S...

A Home Office Makeover, with Lots of Wall-Hung Shelves

Michael Sauers blogs as The Travelin' Librarian, and, as the name might suggest, he owns quite a few books. He also has a home office, which he recently remodeled. The old office had lots of freestanding bookcases, a big desk taking up a bunch of floor space and boxes stacked high. Michael decided he could make better use of the space, while also creating a much more efficient storage system. So he opted for something I've been preaching for many years -- he put everything on the wall. Books, movies, computer . . . virtually everything now rests on shelves resting on brackets attached to metal standards on the walls. You can see the whole project, from "before" to "finished," i...

Black and Decker's The Complete Guide to a Clutter-Free Home

When the review copy of Black and Decker's The Complete Guide to a Clutter-Free Home first landed in my mailbox, I thought:  Uh oh, mistake.  I'm not the "how to organize your house" guy; I'm the remodel guy. Then I opened the book and saw people with power tools, and I knew I was on familiar ground. These Black and Decker "Complete" guides always are complete.  Even as I mumbled, "Well, just throw some of the **** away, and that solves the problem," I saw that this guide has a brief section covering just that--donating, tossing, prioritizing, etc. But homeowners who fail to heed that warning will find scores of storage solutions they can build themselves.  I wonde...

What's Happening at CES 2010

CES 2010

A lot's going on at CES this year. Slate or tablet PCs without keyboards, High Definition and 3D TVs, and a plethora of sleek shiny objects that keep changing how we live. Considering how our technology is changing our home furnishings, it would be interesting to see how furniture manufacturers respond to TVs that don't need any wiring, or tablet PCs that are even sleeker than net books. How long before we forget that TV armoires even existed? Among Innovations Honorees are Inada's CUBE for Home Appliances, and its Doctor's Choice for Health and Wellness. The Doctor's Choice offers posture correction benefits, along with Shiatsu-style massage. Among the Home Theater Accessories Honorees are Sanus S...

Classes Have Begun at the DIY Academy
If I was calling the shots, all schools would be teaching kids a lot more about food (where it comes from, how it is prepared, what it does to our bodies). A lot of people, (chef Jamie Oliver included), agree with that. But I would also like to see more of that vital information usually shoved over to "vocational" classes included in standard curricula. I think everyone should understand how their cars work, how the plumbing in their house functions and how to safely use common hand and power tools. To me, that's where we start truly getting into a "well-rounded" education. For now, though, many of us either have to learn these skills on our own, or, if we are lucky, we have access to some good classroom training. I learned most of what I know about plumbing and wiring a house by taking e...

Recycling Vintage Kitchenware

I really enjoy owning and using vintage kitchenware, and learning their historical data makes these old kitchen items even more nostalgic. However, not all vintage kitchenware is in usable condition, some items may have a lot of rust or be difficult to clean properly, while others should only be displayed. Vintage kitchenware has become highly collectible and it's easy to find these treasures at flea markets and yard sales. But learn about vintage kitchenware before you start collecting, so you'll know what to watch for and it will make your find all that much more fun. Author C. Dianne Zweig has written two good reference books on vintage collectibles ...
