Raking Leaves in New Hampshire
From: Home Addition

By Mark J. DonovanI spent the better part of today raking leaves up at my home on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. I had been told there were a lot of leaves in the yard, but I was still shocked at just how many were on the ground when I arrived upon the scene today. The entire lawn was completely covered in a dense layer of leaves. As I raked the leaves today, I came to the conclusion that due to all of the rain we had had this past spring and early summer there must have been an increase in leaf production on the trees this ye...

Clean Gutters in Early Spring
Clogged Gutters and Heavy Spring Rains can Lead to Undesired Roof RunoffBy Mark J. DonovanThe familiar phrase often repeated in early spring that goes like this: “April showers bring May flowers†should be amended to include a reference to cleaning gutters. With heavy spring rains it is a wise idea to clean out the gutters as soon as there is a hint of above freezing temperatures. Leaves and tree branches that may have fallen into the gutters can cause them to clog up. With heavy spring rains, un-cleaned gutters can overflow their side walls and spill roof rain water where it has not been designed or desired to go.So make cleaning gutters in early spring an annual ritual and let the “April showers bring May flowers†phrase be a siren call as a reminder to clean your gutters.

Completed Custom Tiled Shower Project
By Mark J. DonovanLast weekend I completed my latest custom tiled shower project. It was a complete custom ceramic tile shower renovation project. I have to say it came out beautiful after a lot of planning and work. The project took four weekends to complete. The first weekend was dedicated to removing the old ceramic tile and backer board. The second weekend involved installing a mortar shower pan and new cement backer board. The third weekend was dedicated to actually tiling the shower walls and shower floor. The last weekend was associated with grouting the shower walls and tiles, and doing last minute touch up items such as caulking seams. In the process of installing the custom tiled shower I filmed and documented the entire process. I have posted a number of new videos associated wit...

Autumn Landscaping - Tips For Home Lawns and Gardens
With summer winding down, it's about time to think about the landscaping and cleanup projects you can do this autumn in preparation for the upcoming months. In addition to the obligatory raking leaves, fall is the ideal time to do a number of landscaping projects around the yard. Fall planting is necessary for a vibrant spring bloom as is pruning. Aerating should be done to allow your yard to fully absorb and disseminate fall and winter rains or snow.

Hiring Deck Installation Contractors

Deck Installation and What to Watch Out for When Hiring Deck Installation ContractorsBy Mark J. DonovanA deck is an extension of your home. It is your home’s outdoor living space and if constructed properly should last many years. Unfortunately, more often than you might imagine, deck construction is performed at a subpar level. In many cases decks are constructed so poorly that they would not meet local building codes if permits had actually been pulled in the first place. Poorly constructed decks also cre...

Uh oh. We're in trouble.
For the past couple of weeks, Alex has combined rolling with scooting and pivoting directions when on his tummy to get from here to there. It's not a very efficient means of transportation, but he can go far enough that he gets into stuff Meredith leaves lying around. He also manages to get stuck under things - under a barstool, under the coffee table, under one of his big toys.
